The Destination

La Rioja

La Rioja

The Rioja wine region is located in northern Spain, on both sides of the River Ebro. The local terrain perfectly delimits the region and sets it apart from surrounding territories. Rioja is a privileged region for growing grapes and making top-quality wines, with a unique personality and an exceptional aptitude for ageing.

A visit to different wineries is a must for travelers coming to this region. Some are centuries-old located in ancestral cellars where traditional wine-making systems still predominate, other are, stately and classic, and, of course, there are the newest, designed by some of the best architects in the world.

In addition to this wine and gastronomical wealth, La Rioja is a land rich in fiestas and traditions. The region boast a great heritage and culture that can be experienced in a route through its many and varied wineries, museums, monasteries, castles and historic towns, always enjoying its beautiful scenery and vineyards.

Detailed Itinerary

La Rioja arrival
day 1

La Rioja - arrival

Accommodation: Parador Santo Domingo de la Calzada 4*
Plaza del Santo, 3, 26250 Santo Domingo de la Calzada, La Rioja

The hotel occupies a former 12th-century hospital near the cathedral, erected by St. Dominic to take in pilgrims traveling on the Way of St. James. It has a regal, elegant style, with majestic function rooms and a lobby filled with Gothic arches and wood coffered ceilings. Fine materials and eye-catching colors—whites and blues—give way to comfortable guest rooms decorated with exquisite taste. You will find a warm, harmonious environment which is also highly suited to social events and meetings.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada stands beside the banks of the Oja River on a vast plain. The town's founding is linked to the branch of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela known as the French Route. Legend has it that in the 11th century, this location was a large holm oak forest on the banks of a tumultuous river that descended from the nearby mountains, now known as the Sierra de la Demanda. A hermit named Domingo took up residence in the heart of the forest, dedicating all his energy to making it easier for pilgrims traveling to Compostela to cross this difficult terrain.

La Rioja- departure
day 2

La Rioja - departure

“Everything about wine making” with 2 tasting in barrel at Carlos Moro Winery
Carlos Moro is a renowned winery where you will discover the secrets of DOCa La Rioja wine vinification through walking around the warehouses. The tour begins in the vineyards surrounding the winery continuing to the grape-receiving area as the wine making process. You will have an opportunity to learn about La Rioja winemaking by tasting the wines in making, directly from the barrel in the buried cave. The tasting will be accompanied with olive oils and artisan cheese.

Included in the experience:
- Visit to the winery 1.5 hr
- Guided tasting in barrel: Oinoz Crianza, CM, CM Prestigio
- Tasting: Oliduero Olive Oil, Secret Blend Olive Oil, Cameros artisan cheese

Traditional regional lunch at Vivanco Winery
Here is a wonderful restaurant, in the complex of the museum and the bodega Vivanco, with its bay windows overlooking a sea of vineyards and the Sierra at a backdrop. Enjoy a delicious lunch perfectly "riojano", with its local specialties that make the region famous, (almost) as much as its wines.
